2024 Religious Architecture & Art Award Winners

Partners for Sacred Places presents the winners of the 2024 Faith & Form Awards for Religious Architecture & Art. The awards program was founded in 1978 with the goal of honoring the best in architecture, liturgical design, and art for religious spaces. The 2024 awards recognized excellence in the creation and restoration of religious spaces, the designing of religious landscapes, and the making of religious art.

We want to thank our 2024 awards jury: Jacquelyn Block, AIA, LEED AP (jury chair); Rosa Lowinger, F-AIC, FAPT, FAAR ’09; David Riccio, PA AIC, RP APT; The Rev. Robert R. Webb, III; and Joshua Zinder, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB. We also want to thank Michael J. Crosbie, FAIA, who has organized and overseen the awards program for many years.

Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church & National Shrine

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. Founded in 1916, the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine is the anchor for a vibrant New York neighborhood. The original building was destroyed on September 11, 2001, during the World Trade Center attack. The new church reopened in 2022 as a place for remembrance.

St. Andrew Methodist Church, Hasley Chapel

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. The stand-alone chapel on St. Andrew Methodist Church’s 21-acre campus in Plano, Texas, is envisioned as a sanctuary that harmonizes with its stunning natural surroundings. Nestled in the scenic northwestern corner, the chapel overlooks a tranquil creek and pond, creating a serene backdrop that invites reflection and worship.

Mountain Church of Julong

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. The Mountain Church is the first Christian sanctuary in the new town of Julong, near the city of Quanzhou. The young congregation, from diverse denominational backgrounds and regions across China, hopes the building can serve as a bridge across liturgical and symbolic traditions, fostering a sense of shared identity.

Telyas Chabad Jewish Center

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. Chabad of Hunterdon County built a permanent home after years of renting, creating a 23,000-square-foot community center on a 7.2-acre site with wetlands and bounded by two roads. The building nestles into the landscape, offering a solid, discrete home for the growing congregation.

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. The TSG Foundation Center for Spiritual Development is focused on a comprehensive spiritual educational program of life enhancement teachings that were written and designed by the internationally recognized scholar, philosopher, and author Torkom Saraydarian.

San Joselito Adoration Chapel

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. Canning Liturgical Arts was originally asked to offer technical design advice for the sanctuary area of the San Joselito Chapel, but on further discussion we offered our full design, fabrication, and installation services for the entire space. Over the course of a few months, our team and community volunteers worked on new designs and transformed the chapel. The chapel is located on the campus of St. Joseph’s Church in Norwalk, Connecticut, and the space has seen more use by the local Hispanic community, necessitating more seating and beauty for the people it serves and the saint to whom it is dedicated.

First Christian Church Tower Restoration

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. First Christian Church, a National Historic Landmark by Eliel and Eero Saarinen, was completed in 1942, the first of many works of modern architecture in Columbus, Indiana. The church clock tower is a landmark in the skyline and an important part of the remarkable building and the urban composition, along with I. M. Pei’s nearby library and plaza.

Tabernacle at Oak Bluffs

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. The wrought-iron tabernacle has been a landmark within the town of Oak Bluffs on the island of Martha’s Vineyard since 1879. Standing in the center of Trinity Park, this 100-foot-diameter and 100-foot-high structure has accommodated countless musical performances, religious ceremonies, and “community sings” over the years. The open-air tabernacle sits in a park surrounded by approximately 300 diminutive Victorian cottages and acts as a landmark from the water, where sailors use it for wayfinding.

San Gabriel Mission

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. Conserving San Gabriel Mission after a devastating fire was like an act of spiritual redemption. Seeing the church charred by the flames was both heartbreaking and daunting, but the entire team—the architects, engineers, conservators, and contractors—rose to the occasion, working with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to systematically bring the building back better than it was before.

The Virginia Mae Center

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. The Virginia Mae Center, located on the grounds of Washington National Cathedral, reclaims a 1929 neo-Gothic structure that once served as the College of Preachers. For nearly 80 years, the 27,000-square-foot building provided dormitories and educational space for religious study. In 2008, changing economics closed the college, and the structure sat vacant, deteriorating, for more than 10 years. With support from private gifts, the cathedral embarked on a comprehensive plan to transform the college into a contemporary education and conference center.

Regina Coeli Hall

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist has been a landmark in Savannah’s urban fabric since 1876. Rebuilt in 1900 after a fire, the cathedral was embellished with gilding, murals, and expansive stained-glass windows. A century later, an extensive interior restoration was completed for the Millennium Jubilee, but the lower level containing Regina Coeli Hall retained dropped ceilings and only minimal commercial finishes.

Chapel for the Diocesan Seminary of Plasencia

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. In an unfinished space of considerable height that had been used as a warehouse for 20 years, the chapel project began with widening the hallway to create better access. The space was highlighted by concrete and stone benches.

Young Israel Ohab Zedek

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. This growing Modern Orthodox congregation was bursting out of its current home, a converted retail building on Riverdale’s main street. The design had to conform to a very tight budget, while giving the congregation an enlarged facility with more presence and a stronger visual identity.

modTEXAS

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. An Instagram-based initiative, modTEXAS documents modernist architecture and educates a new generation of preservationists. Followers are invited to seek out subjects and use the #modtexas tag to help crowd-source the largest collection of Texas design worth preserving.

Austin Chapel Murals

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. The artist of this traveling mural exhibition sought to express God’s ideals through the depiction of ordinary, modern people, including children and the unhoused, in biblical scenes.

Friends Seminary Skyspace

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. Friends Seminary K-12 School shares a site and programs with the New York Quarterly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. This project included additions to school buildings and construction of the Skyspace, which contains an aperture that opens to the sky. A programmed light show washes the walls and ceiling, changing the perceived color of the sky and interacting with the natural changes in the sky at dawn and dusk.

Haywood Street Fresco

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. Affirming sacred worth, restoring human dignity, and sabotaging the shame of poverty, the Haywood Street Fresco announces, in plaster and pigment, that you matter. Many of the world’s great art masterpieces were inspired by religious themes and faith stories. But too often, religious art was made over in the image of those in power who were paying for the work. God was rendered European and male. Jesus was more prince than peasant. Salvation meant being upper class.

Sanctuary

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. A cardboard surface designed with parametric modeling software is erected on a sidewalk to form a domed space with three side chapels. Participants complete the experience by writing directly on the surface. They respond to a prompt to share their feelings in the context of LGBTQ+ lived experience and read what others have shared.

Odeon in the Green Mountains

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. For those who gathered at Mission Farm in the Green Mountains in recent years, the conversation centered on having more spaces to connect, share stories, and listen to music. By identifying common spaces and celebrating them, the group hoped to end isolation in their community and nurture a new relationship to the land that they steward.

A Chapel for Concordia

2024 Faith & Form Award Winner. This project was shaped by Concordia Nebraska, the American Midwest, and the global Lutheran Church. Nothing is copied: the design that resulted is evocative, not repetitive. It brings to life the idea that the construction of something new can connect us back to our roots—to community, history, and faith.
