Many sacred places contain fine art and extraordinary craftsmanship, but First Presbyterian Church in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia is a special case – in addition to the sanctuary, which is richly decorated, the church features a set of murals on “Great Women of the Bible” by artist Violet Oakley. Oakley was America’s first important female muralist, and is best known for executing many of the murals in the Pennsylvania State Capitol. A tour of the murals at First Presbyterian and a presentation on their history and significance will be led by Patricia Likos Ricci, the nation’s leading scholar on Oakley. This event is free and open to the public.
